JESSE THOMAS – ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONIST

Jesse Thomas was born in San Francisco and raised in Marin County, California. At an early age, he became skilled in most visual arts, and by his teens he had added aspects of music and the written word to his repertoire, all of which he continues to dabble in to some degree.

Jesse created alongside 1st Generation Abstract Expressionist Walter Kuhlman in his Sausalito Studio, and his Cousin Tommy (Thomas Albright) was Art Critic for the San Francisco Chronicle. Famous Actors, Comedians, Musicians and Collectors whom Jesse has known personally and calls his friends have either purchased or been gifted his creations over the decades.

Mr. Thomas refers to himself as a plein air “Abstract Expressionist”, and that he is, but he can also be called a “Minimalist”, as he doesn’t usually see the need to clutter his artwork with more than is necessary to convey the emotion that he hopes to arouse in those who view it, a “Primal Painter”, “Gestural Painter” or an “Action Painter”, as many of his creations are done with spontaneity, not permitting his brain to control the process as he brushes, pours, spreads, splatters and scrapes paint, but rather allowing his body and soul to determine the outcome of the finished piece, and of course Jesse is a “Modernist”, as he breaks from historical and conservative values, is non-traditional in theoretical practices, and relies heavily on experimentation, therefore as a result of what Jesse accomplishes, he continues to captivate his patrons, and his work will always remain en vogue.

When it comes to the “Drip Painting” aspect of his creative endeavors, if it’s possible, Jesse can be more free-form than other “Drip Artists”, as Jesse, more often than not, uses less technical movement of his hand, allowing the wind to move the paint onto the canvas; like a surfer riding a wave, the surfer can attempt to catch the wave just right, but the wave is the master in the ocean, not the surfer, nor the board on which he rides.
